La Sportiva Trango Alpine GTX

FIRST

Our job involves testing outdoor gear all year round — skis, apparel, accessories, footwear… We receive hundreds of products currently available on the market. While some brands clearly put real effort into developing their gear, we’re often left with the disappointing impression of copy-paste designs, unfinished products, mediocre quality, and questionable durability. In contrast, La Sportiva products always give us the reassuring feeling that they’ve been carefully developed, refined, and truly designed by and for users. At a time when outdoor companies are consolidating and marketing dominates everything, it’s refreshing to see brands still fully focused on product development.

The La Sportiva Trango Alpine GTX perfectly reflects this mindset. This high-performance boot is remarkably hard to fault in the field. You can sense the almost obsessive level of attention that went into its design.

The boot combines cutting-edge materials with more traditional choices, such as a leather upper. It’s equipped with a Gore-Tex membrane and a Vibram sole that performs exceptionally well on technical terrain.

Construction and finish quality are top-tier — precise, clean, and clearly high-end.

The Trango Alpine GTX delivers excellent precision; the forefoot feels instantly comfortable and secure when edging or front-pointing in climbing sections. There’s no unwanted movement in the toe area. If we had to point out one drawback, it would be the boot’s entry: getting the foot in can be tricky. Even though the instep area has some stretch, those with high-volume feet may have to force it a bit. A pull loop at the heel would have helped keep the soft heel collar in place (designed for Achilles comfort) and made putting the boot on easier.

On snowfields, side slopes, and rocky terrain, the Trango Alpine GTX feels extremely secure — striking a great balance between ankle support and proprioception. The boot protects the foot well and offers stable ground contact. It’s fully compatible with most semi-automatic crampons, making it ready for glacier travel and beyond. Its range of use is broad: from demanding hikes to full-on alpine routes — you can rely on it.

And then there’s the weight: just 660 grams, which makes a real difference over long days — saving precious energy without compromising performance.

A technical, lightweight mountaineering boot for demanding alpinists. A benchmark product that earns our FIRST Test4outside award — without hesitation.
