The Millet Intense Ultra has a look that suggests a shoe built for technical terrain. Its “Ultra” name hints at long-distance use… but after our test, that’s less certain.
We found a fairly heavy shoe, weighing close to 340 grams in size 42 2/3 on our scale. There’s a noticeable sense of inertia, partly due to the large (and stiff) rock guard.
Another immediate characteristic is the stiffness of this Millet Intense Ultra. The rigidity of the sole comes from limited—or even absent—cushioning under the metatarsals. Runners who strike on the forefoot may appreciate this, but others will likely want more shock absorption in their stride. As a result, the shoe is very stable: you can feel every nuance of the terrain.
For long distances, the Millet Intense Ultra is too demanding in terms of foot placement. However, it performs very well for fast hiking. The forward roll and the sole’s energy return are both quite minimal.
Grip was rated as excellent: the traction proved effective and was unanimously appreciated both on climbs and descents.
The fit could be improved with laces that slip less and a higher wrap over the instep. The tongue lacks lateral support, and there is no pocket to store excess laces.
A shoe with outstanding grip, but several shortcomings limit its use for trail running.
