General enthusiasm from testers about the excellent Mizuno Neo Zen.
It ticks almost all the boxes of a great training shoe—and even a race-day option if you’re not aiming for elite-level performance. We awarded the First award to this Mizuno Neo Zen.
At just 245 grams in a size 42.5, the Mizuno Neo Zen stands out for how it feels in motion. The nitrogen-infused (!) midsole delivers great energy return, a smooth forward roll, and plush cushioning that absorbs a lot—like running on a soft mattress. Some testers noted a slight loss of lateral stability, but overall, the Mizuno Neo Zen stays steady and encourages a fast, natural stride. What impressed us most: the lively ride and exceptional cushioning. Simply a joy to run in.
A small detail we loved: the elastomer patch at the top of the tongue, which prevents the laces from digging into the top of the foot.
The heel is well locked in place at the back of the Mizuno Neo Zen. The knit upper makes it easy to slip on, and the overall comfort is excellent. Despite its flexibility, foot lockdown remains solid.
Flat laces provide precise tightening and hold well—no need for a double knot.
The outsole grip is solid, even on wet surfaces, as you’d expect from a proper road shoe.
All in all, a well-designed road shoe for training—and possibly more. It offers substantial yet well-balanced cushioning. A well-deserved First award for this highly effective model.
