Our team loved these third generation On Running for “short formats”, such as road half-marathons, because this is its calling. It is also an excellent triathlon shoe, for example for M formats or half, because the On Running Cloudflow doesn’t soak up water (if you get sprayed with water on hot races).
This shoe is leaning towards performance. It’s important to realize because if you run slowly with the On Running Cloudflow it’s not particularly interesting, it even feels hard underfoot. But once your speed increases and you reach forefoot the stride becomes more arial, the Cloudflow reveals itself. It may have a firm stride (almost no cushioning at the front), the energy transmission is direct for an excellent spring and very fluid stride.
We found on moderate distances the On Running Cloudflow is very efficient and feels good underfoot. It isn’t an extreme shoe, the foot strike doesn’t deteriorate as the shoe compensates mini errors.
Your foot is firmly held at the heel and at the front, which is wuite narrow. A “wide” version exists and is called the Cloudflow Wide. The insole is very good quality with elastomer edges that wedges it firmly to the inside of the shoe. Your foot lodges in perfectly and doesn’t move.
We had the feeling that the cushioning seemed firmer when exterior temperatures were lower. Also, when you try the shoes in in a shop, the cushioning becomes more supple after running a few kilometers.
The 6mm drop seems consistent for this type of programme. 252g displayed in size 42 ½ is also within the standard, even if we’ve seen lighter on some models. Let’s say that the Cloudflow isn’t minimalist and submerged in the weight-loss obsession.
Before moving on to the stunning finish of the On Running Cloudflow, what can we nit-pick? Contrary to what the brand says, we weren’t convinced by the sole’s grip in high-speed corners, beware of wet tarmac, the grip is dubious. Another gripe, the laces need a double knot.
The manufacturing quality is sublime, and the beauty is in the details as only the Swiss know how: minimalist logo, asymmetric tongue, overall design, seamless upper, 70% recycled polyester, etc.
The On Running Cloudflow is a very good performance shoe for “short” road distances. With very little cushioning, it requires certain athletic abilities to exploit it correctly. A (very) good model for high-performance triathletes.
