On-Running Cloudventure Peak

We tested the On Running Cloudventure Although its performances were convincing, these trail shoes were, however, too heavy. The Swiss brand reacted quickly by releasing the Cloudventure Peak which we weighed 273g in size 43 compared to the 310g of the classic Cloudventure. To give you perspective, the Salomon S / Lab Ultra 2, weighs 290g, the Salomon S / Lab Sense 6 SG 230g, the Hoka One One Speedgoat 3, 280g… The Cloudventure Peak therefore sits well in this category’s weight.

The same goes for the manufacturing quality. The finesse of the assemblies, the care taken over the collages and a design pushed to the tiniest detail are really impressive. They are atypical shoes, safely nestled in the ON-Running DNA: very precise, careful work.

The On Cloudventure Peak is a sock design that you slide your foot into. Comfort and envelopment are immediate. Although putting on the shoe is not that easy, for our tastes it lacks a strap at the heel to hold the Cloudventure Peak when you put them on (we understand the concern of lightness). The strap on the top of the tongue is very handy.

The Cloudventure Peak’s obvious unusual feature its original sole, we will come back to it. On-Running has chosen to use a stretchy upper. On the front of the foot, and on the sides, there is very little material because the ‘sock’ does not go down that far and the stretch fabric in question is very thin. You gain in comfort, flexibility and lightness, yet you lose protection. You immediately feel any small knocks, rubbing on roots or even having a small pebble that bounces off the top of the foot. On the other hand, the toe area and the heel are (very) well protected.

Very comfortable (thanks to the mesh …), the On Running Cloudventure Peak seems designed for narrow feet. This is actually quite deceptive because the arch area is curved, quite narrow: the foot is very enveloped in this area. The front of the shoe also looks narrow but the stretchy mesh saves space and can be suitable for wider feet too.

So, what is it like in the action? It’s no surprise, you recognize the sensations immediately eyes shut. It requires some adaptation because you have an extremely lively shoe, that enables your foot to live without blocking it! It is both very flexible, cushioning, stiff sometimes, reactive, … in short, a sensation machine that a trail runner who is accustomed to a traditional chassis will need to tame at the risk of rejecting it.

The front part of the shoe is very interesting because the sole enables a great finesse in the foot strikes and a game with the metatarsals because they aren’t blocked laterally: they adapt to the terrain in a cross-slope: is this what On-Running calls the “Speedboard”, a split structure under the forefoot (not visible) that allows you to move the right and left part of the foot independently? Torsional rigidity is low. The feeling of flexibility, as we have seen, is boosted by a very flexible, thin mesh. The gain of precision registered by the sole is decreased by this fabric (but you gain in comfort).

On the other hand, the sole’s thickness, whose height is largely due to the large lugs, can attack the downhill or ravaged terrain easily. The grip and filtration are very noticeable. The cushioning is evident at the forefoot and the entire rear of the foot without being oversize: you retain a dynamic shoe that springs without losing energy. You can run either fore-foot or with a heel foot strike.

The other interesting sensations we had were with the downhill foot strike on stone slabs, you can feel that the high lugs play, deform, and marry to the terrain and absorb any angles: you have flexibility and a sole that really grips the ground. This slight movement of the crampons (at the front / rear plane) may surprise some.

In wet conditions and persistent mud, the On-Running Cloudventure Peak is very reassuring. The grip is powerful and never clogs up with mud. We did notice that small stones got stuck in the ridges under the heel. You must lace up carefully (ultra-thin laces and tongue). Some testers had a few warm spots in this area but overall the comfort is good considering there isn’t any foam padding.

We think that the On-Running Cloudventure Peak are for mid-length trail running, 30/40 kilometers. Another characteristic of the Cloudventure Peak, you feel the lugs underfoot, both forefoot and at the heel. It’s not annoying but the feeling is surprising. The 4mm drop is low, and combined with the feeling that the shoe is quite high (drop and height of sole are two different concepts).

We would have to see their performance in the long-term, particularly the wear and tear of the mesh. For the moment, after a summer in the mountains, they held out well. It is pretty hard though plunging these beautiful white shoes into the mud. But, fortunately they do clean up well, not like the Adidas Terrex Two Boa.

The On-Running Cloudventure Peak is a good shoe for shorter outings. It distills original sensations in terms of fit, comfort, responsiveness and cushioning. It’s very powerful grip makes it a major advantage on wet or muddy terrain, a bonus for its manufacturing quality.
