Hoka One One Speedgoat 3

Rather than revolutionize its range and systematically play the new card, Hoka One One improves its models from year to year. The Speedgoat, has just been updated, version 3. If it seems that this version is not far from the Speedgoat 2 that we tested (https://www.test4outside.com/produit/hoka-one-one-speed-goat-2/), there are some improvements worth noting.

The changes mainly deal with heel and foot support, and its envelopment.

The Test4outside.com team was coming out of a testing session of lightweight racing shoes when they ran with these Hoka One One Speedgoat. After having no cushioning with the racing shoes to the  soft cushioning of the Speedgoat 3, our battered joints were in heaven.

There are two zones, even three, in the Hoka’s cushioning. The forefoot has the least cushioning: there’s enough to prevent feeling the rocky terrain, and if you run with a forefoot strike you can go fast without any energy loss. They also have a powerful grip.

The mid-part is flexible right up to the start of the heel, at the front and rear axle, but also laterally. Runners who are not used to this feeling sometimes overwork their ankles. There is a bit of pitch and roll. This zone absorbs shocks and reminds us of Hoka’s beginnings when they entered the trail running market with its powerful cushioning and oversized shoes.

Lastly, there is the zone at the tip of the heel, very soft and ultra-cushioned, the part that allows you to filter everything and absorb big shocks at full speed in the downhill.

Let’s go back to this unusual cushioning. Of course, a lot of runners who are used to feeling the ground, will find this Hoka One One Speedgoat 3 filters too much. Other runners, looking for comfort, and a powerful interface between them and the ground will be happy. Adopting this Hoka is ultimately a philosophy, a choice that is determined by its stride, its support and the type of terrain.

Anyway, for long distance running the Hoka One One is undoubtedly the bees knees for reduced suffering. On the downhill, you can just go for it: great cushioning, great grip with the Vibram® Mega-Grip soles and the hefty lugs. Giving great grip on muddy terrain, even on slopes. They don’t fill up with mud.

Supinator runners will notice the foam squashes down rapidly and even more so if you are a heavy build.

With a 4mm drop, the Hoka One One Speedgoat 3 has a natural foot roll.

It is an imposing shoe by its design and thick sole. The shoe fits snugly. It is a fairly fine shoe (better with thin socks and make sure to take it to the right size taking into account the foot swelling up).
The heel is firmly held with a combination of foam and semi-rigid reinforcements.  They are surprisingly light – 380g in 42 2/3 is written in the catalogue but in fact in reality they weigh less: 292g in 42 2/3! This is a rare phenomenon the brand stating that it is heavier than it actually is – it’s usually the other way around.

The wide, classic laces spread the pressure evenly. The top section slides well, while at the front of the foot you need to intervene.

The stone guard is very effective and does not stiffen the front of the shoe. It is very well integrated into the structure. In terms of manufacturing, the level of quality is faithful to the Hoka standard: it is faultless. Which does not necessarily mean that it is a durable product. Only a long test and feedback from Test4outside readers can confirm this.

The Hoka One One Speedgoat 3 is a gentle evolution of the previous version. We still find its very evident cushioning, comfort and grip, which have forged their reputation and success.
