The Petzl Pirana descender is aimed at independent users and guides for canyoning.
It’s an adjustable friction descender with spur and locking slot.
It has three rope installation options to select the degree of friction before initiating a descent. Depending on the diameter of the rope used the Petzl Pirana has solutions.
On the other hand, on double use this creates a lot more problems. The passage is less practical. Any more than a 9mm rope the braking is too great for rappels to be smooth and efficient.
A friction spur enables braking to be increased during the descent.
This is an asymmetric descender. Unlike its Pirana big brother that could pivot 180°, this one can only be used one way because the friction spur only works if it is on the right.
The plastic ring in the middle of the descender keeps the connector correctly positioned to facilitate rope installation while the device is connected to the harness and limits the risk of dropping the device. Used with Petzl Vertigo Wire-Lock carabiners the plastic ring perfectly carries out its supportive role.
Thanks to its locking slot, and its additional spur, you can quickly carry out a tie-off.
We really liked this descender, easy to use, attractive and well finished. The ring is very efficient at keeping the connector in position.
