Petzl Tikka RXP

HOT DEAL

The Tikka RXP is the NAO’s little sister, a slightly less powerful version. Like the NAO it uses Reactive Lighting technology, (which can slide into Constant Lighting), it means it instantly and automatically adjusts the lighting beam depending on the environment, the target or the ambient light and enables you to go from reading a map to lighting the path for a hundred metres in front of you. The reaction time is incredibly fast. Another great advantage to this system is its battery management that has more autonomy, up to 10 hours maximum depending of course on the type of use, with an hour of low light in reserve. It has 160 lumens in standard mode and 215 lumens in Max mode, and can light up to a distance of 100 metres no problem. Despite its slightly bulky look the lamp is very comfortable thanks to its washable sponge headband (45mm wide) at the front that gives good cushioning against vibrations.

The adjustable system with two plastic sliding buckles gives a perfect fit and once adjusted doesn’t budge. Well-designed ergonomics. You end up forgetting that you’re wearing a headlamp. The angle of the beam is regulated with a focus component that can change the angle to 90° downwards. Tough and waterproof. Take time to learn how to use all its functions, as there are many combinations possible. You can choose between various combinations with burn times (max power, standard and max autonomy) and beam brightness (reactive mode, constant, red and boost modes). So you can really adapt the lamp to your every need, but it requires a bit of practice before hitting the trail. All the commands are carried out using two buttons; one on the side and one on top, easy without gloves, a different story with winter gloves on.

Petzl offer free software, which enables you to programme your TIKKA to anticipate your needs out and about. Even if it has really good autonomy it is particularly adapted to activities like trail running, with specific time limits and places to recharge the battery. Or equip yourself with a second battery for safety. You can also use ordinary lithium batteries. Especially if you are off on a few days trek or trip mountaineering, trekking or skiing. It is more adapted to these sorts of activities than the NAO because it is lighter and less bulky. A great lamp for longer trips with good battery autonomy. It is of course much cheaper than the NAO offering the Reactive lighting technology at an affordable price, half the power but plenty for normal usage.
