Salomon QST 94

Tested in a 180 cm length, the Salomon QST 94 felt noticeably shorter on snow. We really enjoyed this ski—playful, forgiving, and easy to handle in a wide range of conditions. It immediately struck us as the kind of tool a mountain guide would love: light, responsive, and effortless to pivot, ready to go anywhere. The trade-offs are clear, though—high-speed stability, grip on very hardpack, and a somewhat chattery tip.

This isn’t a high-performance charger, but it delivers on at least 80% of what you’d ask of it. Most importantly, it’s fun—it puts a smile on your face. It requires little effort to steer across mixed snow, acting like a Swiss Army knife that always has an answer. It’s a friendly ski, super pleasant in trees, easy through moguls, and with a tail that never feels punishing.

On edge in long turns at moderate to higher speeds, it runs smoothly, though without much power underfoot. You tend to hold something back, not pushing it too far in edge angle on firm snow. With good technique, it still offers decent grip, but heavier, more aggressive skiers will find its torsional stiffness less convincing.

No problem slipping it into turns with a skidded entry. Switching between carved and skidded turns is lightning-fast. Tightening the radius isn’t its strongest suit—the QST 94 tends to break turns into segments and lose some fluidity. It’s most comfortable around its stated 16.5 m radius, less precise below that, but stretching out the turn by releasing through the tail works beautifully. The rectangular, oversized tail shape almost looks like a second shovel, and—bonus—it slots neatly into gondola racks.

Aesthetically, it’s a win: a fresh, original topsheet with a semi-transparent look and a high-quality base. Mounted with touring bindings, it’s an efficient uphill companion too.

All in all, the QST 94 is an easygoing, enjoyable, playful, and versatile freeride ski. Its main limitation lies with very powerful or heavy skiers, but for most riders, it’s a lighthearted all-rounder that delivers plenty of fun.
