SalomonS/Race Rush SL

The Salomon S/Race Rush SL takes its DNA from slalom skis, just look at its nipped in side cuts, a short ski designed for mini turns. It’s a really sharp product, very well finished. You wouldn’t expect less for a price at 900 euros.

Once on the piste we expected a much more powerful ski, difficult to pilot, and dominant, but this isn’t the case at all. It is really easy in all its uses: turn initiation, fluidity, and grip. This tamed effect doesn’t please skiers who want to go really hard on this ski and especially big-built skiers.

Despite its name, racing aspect and side cuts, this isn’t an extreme product. It is designed for skiers who want to have a blast early morning on a well-groomed piste, just to enjoy the sheer pleasure of carving and have great sensations and short turns.

On soft snow the Salomon S/Race Rush SL is a sheer delight. It goes quickly on its edge and carries you through a wonderful, fluid and rhythmic curve. Don’t be aggressive with this Salomon. It goes instinctively into the turn, on its own, and you can change its radius just by subtly changing your angle and front and rear balance, no surprises await you. It is however happier reducing the turns than lengthening them.

It has very good grip on hard snow, a little less towards the front. The area just before the tip deforms quickly if you load the tip too much. The advantage is that you go quickly into the turn if you lean forwards, but if you load it too much it can lose grip coming out of the turn, especially if you have a heavy build.

All is fine if you are an expert skier riding at very high speed on the edge, but you don’t get the feeling that it is going to hold on mega hard snow. But mostly it is very pleasant, it’s easy to put crossways, even if the tip is loaded. However, the tail doesn’t get in the way despite its oversize shape.

The Salomon S/Race Rush SL is a really nice ski that offers an interesting range of radius variations. Classic short turns, it is aimed at skiers who enjoy that, because as soon as you want to lengthen them and come off the piste it’s complicated. A beautiful glide, we adored its progressive grip and unaggressive on the edge: a grip that is located at the waist and even a little in the tail. The front grip is less convincing, but Salomon needed to make it easier to pilot.
