The Salomon Sense Ride is an old acquaintance. We were able to test all generations up to the 3rd version : Sense Ride 2, Sense Ride 3, last season. With the Sense Ride 4, don’t expect a revolution or any big changes. Instead, Salomon chose to develop this model in successive steps: the evolution process that has begun is very interesting to follow, a kind of fine-tuning.
For this one, Salomon announces a more resistant and breathable upper. We cannot comment on its durability, only the accumulation of excursions will be able to provide any information. On previous models, mesh wear and tear issues were noted. However, we can say that seamless manufacturing is often the source of premature wear and tear unless the technology and materials used are mastered.
What’s an example of a model using seamless pushed more than the Sense Ride 4 to its limits? We don’t know the details, but the results of the ME:SH program initiated several years ago at Salomon can be seen on some models, including the S/Lab Cross, in any case, the sector is clear.
When it comes to improved breathability, we didn’t notice much difference, as the test was performed in temperatures ranging from zero to 20 degrees centigrade. What we can say is that the shoe is well ventilated and that the mesh doesn’t let anything penetrate into the shoe. The stone guard is slightly modified but it’s just a slight redesign.
We put the Salomon Sense Ride 4 on the scales, it’s 20g lighter than the 3rd version of the same size.
The other good news is that the list price is 10 euros cheaper compared to the old model.
So, what should you expect once you’re wearing them? You have a direct, precise, and fluid shoe that provides grip on cross slopes. We liked it on the parts where you could rebound and run, where you have to accelerate, run while having grip. Here, the Salomon Sense Ride 4 displays great efficiency. It has a well-balanced grip on the sole: noticeable but not too much for less technical profiles.
The sole does not saturate in the mud.
As with the Sense Ride 3, we were a little surprised by how diffused (not very present) the Sense Ride 4 cushioning is. As with the previous version, the sole softens after the miles. If filtration does kick in, don’t expect strong or soft cushioning. You find the hard point quickly, especially at the heel. It is best to run it “right”.
Here’s the advantage: you keep precision and a good feeling of ground contact, you retain proprioception. The midfoot area cushioning is both present yet doesn’t take away from the rebound in the slightest. Once you understand how this Salomon Sense Ride 4 works, you can have great fun. You forget about the shoe on non-technical profiles even if the sole and the stone guard see the effects.
We liked the details: the interior foam bumps that surround the ankle. Quicklace lacing is now classic, we know its qualities: speed, and power. Its flaw: do not tighten it too much at the risk of having too much pressure.
The Salomon Sense Ride 4 has come of age. This is a stable shoe, with direct sensations in the sense that you keep contact with the terrain. Responsive, precise, and versatile, it is a sure bet.
