Salomon X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex

Salomon has just updated its X Ultra hiking shoe. While it can’t truly be described as a fast-hiking model, its relatively low weight (355 grams in size EU 42 2/3) allows for quick progress both uphill and downhill. However, the lack of cushioning makes running runnable sections uncomfortable and not really viable.

That said, for active or even sporty hiking, the Salomon X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex offers undeniable strengths. The upper provides excellent foot wrapping and support, combined with very solid ground stability, allowing you to tackle technical terrain without any foot drift.

The new chassis is paired with Salomon’s Quicklace system, which needs to be handled with some finesse to avoid putting too much pressure on the instep. Otherwise, you may start to feel the eyelets on the inside of the foot. The tongue must be pulled forward properly to clear the Quicklace storage pocket. One point to note: whether or not Salomon anticipated the use of thicker socks is unclear, but the X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex runs large, by at least half a size. As a result, we noticed slightly less heel lockdown than expected, with the foot moving a bit more than ideal in that area. With the correct sizing, this minor issue should disappear.

We really appreciated the precision of foot placement, which is almost on par with a trail running shoe. Ground contact is direct — as mentioned, cushioning is virtually absent — allowing for excellent precision. Torsional rigidity is well balanced: stiff enough to inspire confidence on off-camber terrain while still preserving proprioception. The ride is pleasant; it’s clearly stiffer than a trail shoe, but this rigidity helps maintain stability during long, technical outings, especially when carrying a backpack.

No stone pressure was felt underfoot, and outsole grip is good in most conditions. Mud does not build up excessively in the forefoot, though some remains under the heel near the ankle — nothing particularly problematic. Thanks to the Gore-Tex membrane, waterproofing is excellent, albeit at the expense of breathability.

The Salomon X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex gives a strong impression of durability, which will need to be confirmed over long-term testing. Reinforcements are well placed, stitching — a common wear point — is discreet, and the mesh flex zone is reinforced. The toe bumper is substantial. We also liked the pronounced heel pull tab, which makes the shoe much easier to put on. A well-sized and practical strap (easy to slip a finger through) further helps with entry.

Comfort was rated 7 out of 10.

The Salomon X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex is a very good hiking shoe for moving fast — or not — on day outings, whether on technical terrain or easier trails. A sound, trustworthy shoe with a firm, precise ride and excellent foot wrapping.
