We previously tested the Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX (version 4), a hiking — even fast-hiking — shoe that we really appreciated.
The new version is once again built with GORE-TEX, providing waterproof protection that we tested and confirmed in the field.
It delivers excellent ground contact, which is very reassuring in technical sections. The foot feels extremely stable, with no rolling sensation. Cushioning is minimal, barely noticeable under the metatarsals, resulting in a rather direct, precise feel.
With the move to version 5, Salomon has dropped its iconic Quicklace system. The lacing on the Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX is now more traditional, and less prone to errors such as overtightening. That said, the round laces require a bit more time and attention to tighten properly all the way to the base of the toes. Overall foot hold is slightly less secure, despite moving from four to five eyelets. The large instep strap is still present — not particularly aesthetic and adding visual bulk to the design. At the toe flex point, we noticed a crease, though without any impact on waterproofness.
On the trail, comfort is unquestionable. Padding is thick and well positioned, the foot is well protected from impacts, and the stride rolls smoothly with no pressure points. The Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX also sheds some weight, coming in at 430 grams in size EU 42 2/3, compared to 455 grams for version 4.
Outsole grip is very good. Overall build quality is solid, with excellent heel reinforcements. The toe bumper is particularly well executed.
The ankle area has been revised, with additional padding for improved protection.
Drop: 11 mm.
A redesigned hiking shoe, now more clearly oriented toward walking rather than fast hiking. Proven solutions come together to deliver a comfortable and robust product.
