We know this Smith Network helmet very well, which is perfect in very hot conditions because it has excellent ventilation and you can start climbing up over passes without your head boiling. For other conditions we prefer the Smith Ignite which we have also been able to test at length.
The Smith Network’s large openings do have one drawback: flying insects, especially those that sting (!), get trapped and come into contact with the top or front of your skull. Technically it’s not that easy to kit a helmet with a fine grid that adds overall weight and can also cause little noises, but it’s something to explore further for a future Network version II.
Otherwise the Smith Network is still an excellent helmet with Mips technology and Koryod integration. It has honeycomb material located on the sides of the helmet, which absorbs the power of any possible shock. Thanks to its cellular construction it doesn’t prevent the air circulating in this area.
The Smith Network weighs 300g, size M. The mass distribution is good, there is no imbalance at the front or rear. Over long distances, it doesn’t cause neck pain or fatigue.
We really appreciated no squeaks or other annoying noises.
Overall it is comfortable, nevertheless with a certain firmness. Removable foam padding (for washing) don’t hold much sweat. The helmet adjustment is done with an easy to handle wheel. It does not have the same “ease” of a Boa system but remains precise and efficient.
Adjusting the chin strap is easy. The straps are adjusted using two quick-closing buckles. The thin and comfortable straps tend to twist when you are not wearing the helmet, so you need to check them when you put it on your head.
Wearing sunglasses, including those with a wide screen, is not a problem. They are positioned under the helmet without friction or pressure points.
Last but not least, the Smith Network is delivered with an airy textile storage bag with carrying straps: very practical and good quality.
The Smith Network is still this very airy helmet designed for summer outings. It offers excellent protection thanks to Mips and Koryod technologies. Only one downside: due to its airiness flying insects can get in.
