OspreyTalon Pro 30 Carbon

FIRST

With the all new Talon Pro 30 Carbon Osprey continues to brilliantly assert that light bags can do as well if not much better than others. Weighing 1100g, you wonder how the Talon Pro 30 Carbon can withstand heavy loads, and also ensure excellent carrying comfort?

The reason lies in the quality of the back. The brand has done an exceptional job in terms of technicality, efficiency, and design. The back is excellent, it’s very breathable and ventilated. It also adapts to different body morphologies and situations such as when you lean forward: there is no stiffness, you can move easily, and weight is very well distributed. The hiker is protected from hard objects in the pack, such as an insulated bottle or any technical equipment (stove, climbing carabiners). We really appreciated how quiet this Osprey Talon Pro 30 Carbon is despite its frame, there is no annoying squeaking.

The back is very easily adjusted with a Velcro system. The abdominal belt is wide, comfortable and is also excellent at stabilizing the pack. The strap is adjusted on both sides, which is very practical. Two huge pockets on each side of the hips means you can store a large-format smartphone and other kit.

The shoulder straps are no exception. Despite them being relatively thin they are extremely comfortable. They are also very breathable, preformed, and have a load booster.

It’s difficult to talk about an Osprey product without mentioning the quality of the straps, always thin but effective, which slide very well. You can usually manipulate them with only one hand. The only criticism about this pack is the waterproof zips, which don’t slide that easily. After testing the Osprey Talon Pro 30 Carbon again whilst ski touring (not what its initially designed for), we changed a bit from our first impression. With time, the zips slide a bit better. The cords and especially the finger-sized ends are extremely practical (and strong).

The bag has a wide top access, two expandable side storage spaces, one for the water bladder, a system for attaching a helmet, as well as a large stretchy volume for clothing or kit.

Quite narrow and tall, the Osprey Talon Pro 30 Carbon positions well the length of the spine and is at one with the hiker.

The interior of the pack has a single, mesh storage pocket. Osprey has not forgotten the traditional key ring in this same space.

There is a water outlet at the base of the bag, not that the Osprey is very sensitive to water.

The Osprey Talon Pro 30 Carbon wins the Test4outside FIRST Award. Designed for light hiking, it provides high performance, and is comfortable to carry. The load is very well distributed thanks to a breathable and very technical back.

    1. Andrew Wickham says:

Excellent design and construction but I’m disappointed that there are no Stow-on-the-Go trekking pole attachments, a feature of Osprey packs that I’ve always found extremely useful. The zips on the hip-belt pockets are stiff to use but I’ve found that a thin smear of silicon lubricant (such as Lakeland’s free’n’easy) makes a great difference.
