We really enjoyed testing this protective jacket for running and trail running. Weighing in at 190 grams on our scale, the The North Face Summit Superior Futurelight falls into the lightweight category—though not quite ultralight. It strikes a great balance between waterproofing, comfort, and weight.
Even though it doesn’t feature a waterproof central zip, the Summit Superior Futurelight handles heavy showers and wind without issue. The membrane is effective. Despite the close-to-body fit, the fabric doesn’t cling to the skin in the rain, unlike some ultra-thin (and very light) jackets.
The overall protection is exactly what you’d expect from a trail running jacket: the collar rises high enough to protect without being intrusive, and the hood can easily accommodate a headband or beanie without obstructing peripheral vision.
The fabric is stretchable and moves well with your stride. However, unless you size up, there’s not enough room to wear a trail running pack underneath the jacket.
We especially liked the cut of the sleeves, particularly around the wrists. The cuffs are angled for added comfort and protection over the top of the hands. A large GPS watch fits easily underneath thanks to the elasticated wrist area. The recycled fabric is tear-resistant and held up well during brush encounters.
Note: be mindful of the waist drawcord located on the left side of the jacket. Make sure to tuck any excess cord inside to prevent it from snagging on branches.
The Summit Superior Futurelight packs easily into its right-hand zip pocket for convenient storage. The reflective strips work well for nighttime visibility.
A top-tier jacket for action and trail running. It offers solid protection against most weather conditions, with a durable, high-performance fabric.
