VAUDE SESVENNA PRO jkt

This insulation jacket is officially dedicated to ski touring. Its design, materials, and cut extend its use to mountaineering, trekking, snowshoeing, etc. It’s not a thick jacket, down jacket type, it offers thermal protection in suited to activities where you move a lot. We know the materials used by Vaude really well: Polartec Alpha on the front and Primaloft Silver Eco Insulation on the back and arms. All that’s missing is the Mimic Platinum used by Häglofs for the picture to be complete!

Joking aside, we have long been convinced by these hydrophobic synthetic insulations, warm, that don’t settle in the jacket’s down compartments, and don’t become smelly. And in the case Primaloft Silver Eco, the use of recycled materials greatly helps to offer a jacket with less environmental impact.

With these two cumulative insulations, we get a warm jacket that is still thin. It offers sufficient protection against the cold while not necessarily (rarely) requiring the use of a protective layer when going uphill. When being active, you don’t heat up too quickly. However, you have to play with the underlayers (T-Shirt, possibly mid-layer). Temperature regulation is pretty good, up to a point, but with increased physical activity you have to open the jacket wide or take it off. On the other hand, this thermal threshold is delayed by a more breathable fabric under the arms and at the back.

These fabrics are also stretchy, but not too much: the cut of the jacket is preserved, freedom of movement is fully respected. The advantage of the mapping on this jacket is that the chest area is relatively windproof, so the skier is well protected.

An area at the back, typically where a backpack sits against, is stretchy and breathable. Its evacuation capacity depends on the backpack you use. We tested with two different models. With a backpack with a so-called “classic” back (which isn’t necessarily very ventilated but not very flat on your back either), breathability is good. We tested it with a waterproof backpack (some brands offer this type of kit for hiking), with a very flat back, we obviously have a rise in temperature in this area. So, to sum it up, the Vaude Sesvenna Pro jacket is breathable at the back but the choice of backpack makes all the difference.

This “airy” part at the back adds extra weight to the jacket, we weighed it at 470g in size L. It still good for the Vaude Sesvenna Pro jacket to be stuffed into a backpack without a second thought. It is not compressible but takes up little space.

We particularly appreciated the warm hood, respectful of side vision, and very enveloping. However, although it does not have any adjustment, it’s good, because it is very tight and holds in place in strong winds. The height of the collar is ideal: it’s warm without adding too much thickness if you wear other layers. The other very popular point was the cuff area, which was very comfortable, cozy and tough. The seams are tough.

The central zip, like on the pockets, slides and grips well, even if your fingers are cold. The side pockets are huge, you can slip in goggles (but not skins, we did try!) And all manner of objects.

Last but not least, the size of the jacket is particularly comfortable. It does not include any extra thicknesses, an adjustment system that can create a pressure point with a harness or friction from a backpack.

Vaude Sesvenna Pro jacket with its hydrophobic materials offers great thermal capacity. It is cut for ski touring, to offer a mix between protection and breathability. A very comfortable product to wear in addition to a hard shell.
