The Helly Hansen Verglas Hooded Down 2.0 is filled with down that has received a DWR (durable water repellent) treatment, making the jacket fairly resistant to moisture. That said, its water-repellency has its limits — in persistent rain, you’ll want to throw on a proper waterproof shell sooner rather than later.
The insulation performance of the Verglas Hooded Down 2.0 is excellent. You immediately feel the warmth. Despite its relatively slim profile, it delivers a high level of thermal insulation. The fit is close to the body, so if you plan on wearing multiple layers underneath, consider sizing up.
We tested the Verglas Hooded Down 2.0 over many months in a wide range of outdoor conditions. Aside from the occasional and typical loss of a few down feathers, we found very little to criticize — and we looked hard!
The cuffs are elasticated, which keeps the sleeves securely in place while allowing full visibility and freedom of the hands for rope handling or clipping carabiners. There’s no risk of the jacket getting in the way.
Naturally, the Verglas Hooded Down 2.0 is packable, and it includes a zippered chest pocket on the left side, as well as a deep internal stash pocket — perfect for storing a ski mask, hat, or other gear.
In short, this is an outstanding insulated jacket, well-designed and effective across most outdoor activities. A true must-have. We proudly awarded it a First Award.
