WAA Ultra Carrier short sleeve tee-shirt started with the idea of a well-designed T-shirt to be used for a simple bottle holder or a backpack for short to long distances (5-hours).
To fulfill these specifications the designers at WAA have positioned a collection of pockets all around the hips with diverse volumes. This zone near the pelvis allows you to carry some weight without feeling it too much.
So there is space for gels, bars, telephone, wind jacket, lightweight jacket and water. WAA state that you can carry two 50ml or 75ml bottles. We don’t totally agreed. As the carrying area is just near the skin where it’s bony (hips), it’s best to uses soft flasks that don’t provoke pressure points. The other problem is that it is not that easy to position these flasks so that they don’t leak (in other words upright).
All-in-all there is almost 3 liters in capacity with these pockets that close with Velcro®. For the sake of saving weight WAA have minimized the size of the tongue (reflective at night) that enable you to open and close the pockets. The system works well on the front pockets, less so on the rear pockets – we would’ve liked an easier option with more security in closing – you could lose things from these rear pockets if not closed correctly.
We did appreciate this technical tee-shirt for short distances. It replaces the need for a belt or backpack. It is breathable at the back (because there is no backpack). For short distances it is easy to use, you take your tee-shirt and quickly slide what you need in the pockets. The integrated central zip means you can take the tee-shirt off still full without any problems, a little like a backpack. (Do remember to empty the pockets before washing!)
It is a close fitting top to ensure good carrying comfort and the material isn’t very stretch, and sizing is almost two sizes below your normal size, so it is imperative to try it on before buying.
The breathable material is tough and evacuates sweat. Altogether it is warm (fabric quite heavy) the flat stitching are unnoticeable. An elastomer band at the base of the tee prevents it from riding up.
Last but not least, you can use it biking too, and fast hiking.
