Wickelfisch develops waterproof packs in the shape of fish! The pack we wanted to test has an aquatic animal form: a pack that enables you to keep all your stuff dry when you throw yourself into the water.
The Wickelfish we tried was voluminous 30L and you can fit shoes, clothes, towel and more!
If you don’t squeeze all the air out before closing it, it transforms into a buoy. That can be a choice, a safety device, either as protection or a toy. Wickelfisch DNA is found at Basler Rheinschwimmen. Every year during this event thousands of people slip into the Rhine. The participants slide their kit into waterproof packs and use them as buoys.
The Wickelfisch can be used for any activity where you need to keep your kit dry. The volume is useful in most cases except maybe for some sleek kayaks. There are other tube shaped sacks that are more suited to canyoning. For the swimrun, idem, we use other types of products. But, for travelling in tropical countries or even to preserve your kit from the sand, Wickelfisch is perfect.
It is waterproof thanks to the classic method of rolling the sack back onto itself 7 times, then clipping the buckles together. It’s super simple to use and trustworthy. The buckles are solid and well finished (like the rest of the pack in fact). Two wide carrying straps, removeable so you can carry the pack on your shoulders. It is basic but functional. Fully loaded your shoulders aren’t cut in half, but obviously it doesn’t have the full comfort like a real back pack: no foam padding on the straps or on the back of the pack.
After using in water we did notice slight humidity due to condensation. If you put a camera or telephone inside it’s a good idea to put them in freezer bags and remove the air to protect them completely.
The Wickelfisch is a simple, basic, functional and practical product that lets you manage situations where your kit could get wet. The reasonable price means it is worth having with you in case you need it for water sports. We tested it in yellow but it is available in other colors.
