Designing a high-performance racing shoe takes patience, precision, and intelligence. That’s true for road shoes—but even more so in trail running, where engineers must reconcile seemingly opposing qualities: cushioning vs. stability, lightness vs. protection, agility vs. control. And the ultimate benchmark remains performance—a guiding principle clearly evident in the development of Jim Walmsley’s shoe of choice, the Hoka Tecton X 3.
Weighing in at just 285 grams, the Tecton X 3 immediately stands out for its lightness. But the real magic lies in the midsole design, which strikes a refined balance between energy return and ground stability. The carbon plate delivers a noticeable boost on rolling terrain (think Bertone to Elena on the UTMB course), while the foam compound and shoe geometry allow for terrain filtering without compromising lateral feedback. The result? You can roll, rebound, and accelerate—with confidence.
We especially appreciated the wide sole platform, which adds a significant layer of stability, something many competitors miss, particularly in the heel area. Shoes that are too narrow in this zone can be problematic on uneven terrain, but the Tecton X 3 gets it right.
Initially, the ultra-flexible upper left us skeptical. There’s no traditional tongue, minimal supportive structure—even in the heel—and the toe bumper is barely there. This first impression of lacking foot hold feels strange. But once in motion, whether it’s the body adapting or the sole doing the work, the upper’s softness becomes a non-issue.
We also loved the integrated gaiter, which helps prevent trail debris from sneaking in. Getting the shoe on is surprisingly easy too.
So, who is this shoe for? Clearly, it’s designed with podium chasers in mind. But that doesn’t mean it’s off-limits for the strong recreational runner. If you’ve got the budget, this is a racing shoe that’s not completely exclusive. It handles moderate paces gracefully thanks to its sole comfort, excellent grip, and responsive ride. That said, foot protection is minimal, so know what you’re signing up for.
With its lively stride, cushioning, light build, grip, and stability, the Hoka Tecton X 3 has all the hallmarks of a high-performance trail shoe. Protection is sparse and the €250 price tag is steep—but for those seeking speed and precision, it’s a standout. It earns our Core Test4Outside Award.
