The Columbia Platinum Peak II 3L Shell set was highly appreciated by the testers for its excellent value for money, allowing skiers to get properly equipped without breaking the bank. The performance was judged very good for the price.
The Columbia Platinum Peak II 3L Shell jacket was particularly praised because it ticks all the boxes expected from this type of product. We tested it together with the matching pants.
First of all, this shell is well cut — fairly close to the body but not too tight, leaving room for additional layers.
Its level of protection in snow or rain is high. Columbia’s in-house membrane does the job both in terms of waterproofing and durability. Even when rubbing against ski edges, there’s no constant fear of tearing the Columbia Platinum Peak II 3L Shell. The fabric is also slightly stretchy, which improves comfort.
Columbia’s designers made sure to channel the hood drawcords at the base of the neck so they can’t whip your face when the hood volume is tightened. The hood fits over a helmet and does not obstruct lateral vision.
The neck area is very well protected, and the inside fabric there is soft against the skin.
Another strong point: the gusseted sleeve ends, which easily fit over gloves for even better waterproofing and comfort. The Velcro straps in this area are powerful.
We also liked the waterproof zippers with small pull tabs, making them easy to operate with gloves on.
The jacket features a double hem adjustment and a traditional powder skirt.
The Columbia Platinum Peak II 3L Pant could have matched the jacket’s level, but unfortunately the side vents use non-waterproof zippers. Instead, a flap covers the zipper, and moisture can get through. This flap isn’t very elegant either.
Aside from that, comfort, waist fit, waterproof zippers, deep pockets, ski-boot volume adjustment, edge-guard reinforcements — everything else on the Columbia Platinum Peak II 3L Pant is top-tier.
An excellent ski shell: well cut, waterproof, durable, built for action. Pants that come very close to flawless. A technical outfit at an affordable price.
