We were able to test the Columbia Arctic Crest Down Hooded insulation jacket over many months. In the end, we hesitated to award it a Test4outside.com prize. One criterion prevented us from doing so on an otherwise very accomplished jacket: breathability, which clearly lags behind other products in this category. During cardio-intensive activities or even alpine skiing, the Columbia Arctic Crest Down Hooded tends to retain perspiration instead of evacuating it to the outer clothing layers. To its credit, however, the jacket dries quickly.
Aside from this point, in terms of comfort—and above all thermal insulation—the Columbia Arctic Crest Down Hooded is highly effective. It was even described as very warm: thanks to its premium insulation, it allows the wearer to reduce the number of layers. It uses 700-fill-power down, which is a solid and interesting figure, though it does not correspond to the very highest-end down (900 to 1000 cuin).
Very warm, the Columbia Arctic Crest Down Hooded also features a fitted women’s cut, which is the version we tested. Be aware that the jacket runs slightly small; it fits close to the body, so sizing up is recommended if you plan to layer clothing underneath.
Very comfortable to wear, the Columbia Arctic Crest Down Hooded provides excellent lower-back coverage—a major advantage when sitting on a chairlift. The waist features two adjustment points.
The neck is also very well protected. An additional protective jacket can easily be worn over it to enhance insulation in this area.
The Columbia Arctic Crest Down Hooded is water-repellent. The hood is fairly enveloping and suits most body shapes, but it lacks an adjustment system. In strong winds, the hood may struggle to stay in place.
Weighing 315 grams in size M (women’s), the Columbia Arctic Crest Down Hooded offers a very attractive weight-to-warmth ratio.
The zippers glide smoothly. While the jacket can be compressed and stored in one of its zippered pockets, we would have appreciated a more practical integrated stuff sack. Packing it into the pocket requires a bit of time and effort.
A very warm insulation jacket considering its relatively thin profile. Attractive women’s cut. Excellent comfort. Breathability falls short.
