Forclaz Mérinos MT900

HOT DEAL

We all know that the most effective method for managing thermal regulation is to play with different layers of clothing. The generally applied rule is that of 3 or 4 layers: the t-shirt, the base layer, the down jacket, and the rain/windproof jacket.

By playing with different assembly options and the number of layers we superimpose, we achieve a good level of comfort in action. In this configuration, the second layer, the base layer, is the keystone of the whole, the adjustment variable. The Forclaz brand offers a merino base layer, the MT 900, which we tested during treks and climbs.

First impression, it is lightweight, with simple aesthetics, a successful cut, fitted to the body, covering the lower back well, very comfortable. The basic colors, blue-black or all-black, provide discretion if one wants to use it casually (at the office, in the city…).

The Forclaz MT900 merino base layer is a hybrid construction. The central front part is lined with light insulation with a mesh structure, for good thermal protection. The rest of the jacket is made of merino with two different weights, one of 260 gr/m2 for warmth, and one of 190 gr/m2 under the arms for breathability. This hybrid construction works well and also offers odor limitation. Merino brings a feeling of softness, very flexible, the whole adheres to movement, like a second skin.

During the test, we used the Forclaz MT900 merino base layer in different configurations, as an underlayer but also alone paired with a t-shirt (also merino). In both cases, the thermal contribution is evident. Another advantage of merino, even when wet, it retains a large part of its thermal properties and above all, it dries quickly.

In terms of finishing, the merino threads are sheathed for more resistance. Throughout the test period, we found no signs of premature wear… to be confirmed after a full season of use. The collar rises well up to the chin for good protection. The zipper slides well, easy to grasp thanks to a small cord reinforced with a plastic frame, perhaps a detail, but when wearing thick gloves, it’s convenient to grab it without getting frustrated.

The Forclaz MT900 merino base layer has three zippered pockets, two for the hands, large enough, practical for storing bars, maps… One on the chest, for glasses, phone… The thumb loops at the end of the sleeves are very practical. They come up nicely over the top of the hand, and the elastic finish offers good support. A warning to climbers, remember to remove your hands from the thumb loops before starting rope maneuvers, especially rappelling, as rope friction mercilessly attacks the fabric…

In conclusion, we would like to find some faults with the Forclaz MT900 merino base layer, but we haven’t found anything glaring… except perhaps that a hooded version would make it even more effective, but would also make it heavier (dilemma!).

Its quality/price ratio is excellent, the merino used is eco-friendly even though the whole is manufactured in China…

Durable, very comfortable, lightweight, usable as a main layer or underlayer, perfect for the bottom of a backpack as a thermal layer. A versatile jacket, for long treks, mountaineering, climbing, it easily fits under a harness. A must-have at a moderate price.
