We weren’t familiar with trail running shoes from Keen, so we approached the Keen Seek with curiosity.
This shoe features a 6 mm drop. Right away, we noticed limited cushioning, particularly in the heel. Paradoxically, the Keen Seek offers more cushioning under the metatarsals, which is somewhat surprising. Forefoot runners will be better served.
On the run, the forward roll is efficient. The relatively firm midsole foam doesn’t provide much energy return. However, because of the close-to-the-ground feel, there’s no energy loss during foot strike. We would recommend the Keen Seek more for mid-distance runs, as it requires a precise running style.
Grip was rated as good, with a very flexible outsole rubber.
The forefoot is roomy, with a well-sized toe box. Foot hold is solid, and the lacing extends quite far down. The lace garage is positioned a bit low, making it slightly tricky to tuck the laces away.
The ankle collar doesn’t hug the foot closely enough, which is a drawback as debris can enter the shoe. The heel area is comfortable. Overall, the Keen Seek is pleasant to wear. Built like a slipper-style construction, it’s easy to slip on.
Build quality is clearly there, with precise assembly. The durability of the mesh will need to be monitored over time. The rock guard could be a bit more substantial along the sides of the foot.
One standout feature of the Keen Seek? Its reflective laces for nighttime visibility.
