Alpina Rootage 2 Mips

FIRST

This Alpina enduro helmet is equipped with MIPS technology, now considered an essential safety feature in cycling, skiing, and many other sports helmets. More than 150 partner brands have adopted MIPS technology. Developed in Sweden around thirty years ago, the concept is based on solid scientific research addressing a well-identified risk in head injuries. The brain is more vulnerable to rotational forces generated by angled impacts than to the forces produced by direct linear impacts. These rotational movements can cause different areas of the brain to move relative to one another, stretching brain tissue and potentially leading to concussions or other traumatic brain injuries.

The MIPS system incorporates a low-friction layer inside the helmet. This layer allows a relative movement of approximately 10 to 15 mm between the helmet and the head, helping to redirect part of the rotational energy and reduce the amount transmitted to the brain. A helmet equipped with MIPS is easily recognizable thanks to its visual signature: a yellow dot located on the rear of the helmet.

In addition to MIPS technology, the Alpina Rootage 2 Mips features extended coverage around the temples and the back of the head to increase the overall protective surface.

Its retention system, although not based on a Boa dial, is highly effective. Adjustment is quick, precise, and finely tuned. The Alpina Rootage 2 Mips remains securely in place even on rough and demanding terrain. Despite the presence of a visor, there is very little front-end inertia while riding.

We particularly appreciated the insect mesh integrated into the front vents of the helmet. The semi-flexible visor also performs its role effectively.

Ventilation was judged to be highly efficient. The Alpina Rootage 2 Mips does not become noticeably heavier due to sweat accumulation. The chin strap uses Alpina’s Ergomatic closure system, which is exceptionally quick and easy to operate. Another positive point is the chin protection area, which remains comfortably and securely positioned.

The Alpina Rootage 2 Mips is built using a triple-shell construction. The matte black paint finish is particularly attractive and well executed.

A very impressive enduro helmet equipped with MIPS technology. Insect mesh, effective fit adjustment, excellent ventilation, and a quick-release chin buckle system: it has everything expected from a modern enduro helmet. A highly convincing model that earns our First Award.
