With the Jetboil TrailCook 1.2L, Jetboil once again delivers the excellence we’ve already experienced with the Jetboil Flash and Jetboil Stash. The system stands out for its compact design, with every component neatly nesting inside the pot, as well as for its impressive heating performance and the practicality of its cookware.
Let’s start with its heating performance. The TrailCook brings 1 litre of water to a boil in around 4 minutes and 15 seconds. The lightweight 1.2-litre pot provides enough capacity to cook comfortably for two people. Lighting the Jetboil TrailCook 1.2L couldn’t be easier—there’s no need for matches or a lighter. Simply turn the control knob counter-clockwise until you hear a click and the built-in piezo igniter sparks the burner. The flame control is precise, offering a much wider temperature range than a typical ultralight backpacking stove, making simmering and controlled cooking far easier.
The system remains efficient even in light wind, although, as with any stove, performance improves when it is sheltered. The compact burner packs away in its own protective pouch and locks securely onto the base of the pot for excellent stability. The included fuel canister stabilizer features non-slip feet and does a good job of improving stability, but it’s still important to make sure the stove is set up on level, solid ground.
As with many Jetboil stoves, we really like the lid, which doubles as a strainer for draining pasta or rice. A small vent also helps prevent boil-overs by releasing excess steam. The lid’s silicone tab stays cool enough to handle without burning your fingers. The folding pot handle, covered in silicone, is another highlight, providing a comfortable, secure grip while remaining cool to the touch. It folds neatly away for storage. The pot features a durable ceramic non-stick coating that is both hard-wearing and easy to clean. Our only criticism is that the measurement markings inside the pot are difficult to read.
The insulated cozy significantly reduces the risk of burns while also protecting the pot from scratches and dents during transport. However, it tends to stain easily and requires careful cleaning. The pot is also compatible with Jetboil’s silicone coffee press.
A second container, which serves as both a bowl and a plate, clips securely underneath the pot during transport.
Weight is well controlled: we measured the Jetboil TrailCook 1.2L at 610 g (21.5 oz), including the fuel canister stabilizer.
Overall, this is an outstanding backpacking stove. It may not be the lightest option on the market, but its exceptional heating power, precise flame control, reliability and ease of use more than make up for the extra grams. Compact, practical and dependable, it is an excellent choice for two-person backpacking trips. A benchmark in its category.
