With the Sublime 88, Kästle delivers a fine demonstration of force: coming remarkably close to exceptional, it snags our First Award without a shadow of a doubt. Compared to its bigger brother, the Sublime 93—which feels more at home in crud, slush, or deep powder—the 88 prioritizes on-piste efficiency while retaining remarkable all-mountain versatility. And while the temptation is often strong to choose the wider waist width to cover the entire mountain, the qualities of this 88 should certainly not be overlooked when buying.
On snow, testers were captivated by its masterclass in balance. Accessible, fluid, and remarkably well-metered, it is a lively, playful ski that disappears underfoot without ever demanding to be wrestled into submission. That said, it doesn’t lack temperament: as soon as you step on the gas, it rises to the occasion, accelerating hard and allowing you to lay down sweeping arcs at high speeds with imperial forebody stability, backed by that muted, dampened signature sound characteristic of Kästle constructions.
Beneath an apparently supple flex pattern, the Sublime 88 packs an impressive amount of engine under the hood. Its edge grip on hardpack when carving is impeccable, allowing you to vary turn radii at will—even engaging in short, carved wedeln sequences with an energetic pop from one turn to the next. The tail profile is perfectly calibrated to finish turns clean without oversteering or understeering. In drifted or skidded turns, the ski completely gets out of its own way: tip and tail are never felt, allowing you to pivot or come to an instant stop with total peace of mind.
In choppy terrain or bumps, its tip smooths out the snowpack and floats over obstacles without transmitting harsh chatter into your legs. Adding to this remarkable dampening is exceptional base glide and premium finishing built to last in line with the brand’s DNA: a scratch-resistant topsheet and integrated tip protection running seamlessly as an extension of the steel edge.
An accomplished, exceptionally well-rounded all-mountain ski that is playful, confidence-inspiring, and high-performing all at once. A triumph for the Austrian brand’s engineers, rightfully rewarded with a Test4outside First Award.
