For just over €200, Decathlon offers the Wedze AM 500 ski set. AM stands for All Mountain. Let’s say it straight away: this price is unbeatable, especially considering that quality and functionality have not been sacrificed. Yes, there are one or two loose stitching threads, the waterproof zippers on the pockets aren’t really waterproof (and tend to degrade when exposed to UV), but the essentials are there to ski comfortably without breaking the bank.
The Wedze AM 500 set provides both protection and insulation, as it is lined with polyester padding. Warm and comfortable, the fabric is slightly stretchy and adapts well to body movements. Breathability and waterproofing are a step below the membranes used by major outdoor brands.
The zippered vents (non-waterproof zippers) allow for effective temperature regulation.
The Velcro adjustments at the cuffs are very efficient and stay secure even when the sleeves are full of snow; glove adjustment is excellent. There is also a ski pass pocket, although the zipper must be handled carefully as it is very thin.
The horizontally opening pockets are perfect for keeping hands warm or carrying gear.
The hood does not have enough volume to fit over a helmet. However, the powder skirt is very effective, and the elastic waist adjustment system works well.
The pants follow the same philosophy: warm and comfortable. Note that the waist runs small; it may be necessary to size up, especially since the Velcro waist adjustment is very effective.
For under €90, the Wedze AM 500 pants are impressively well equipped: ventilation zippers with mesh lining, waterproof zippers, good protection against ski edge impacts, and reinforced gaiters that stay securely in place over ski boots.
The Wedze AM 500 set is equipped with a Recco reflector on both the jacket and the pants.
An excellent—if not unbeatable—value for money for this warm and comfortable ski set. Proof that it is possible to gear up without overspending.
