Tested in the 170 cm length with a 15.4-meter turn radius, the Kästle Wave 74 lady immediately catches the eye with its high-end cosmetics: a matte black finish elevated by selective varnish effects forming subtle waves, complemented by a gorgeous metallic tail protector and Kästle’s famous lightweight tip outlined in a very chic beige-gold. A true visual gem that displays a clear calling: on-piste carving with a slight touch of all-mountain versatility. That sets the stage.
On snow, this lively and energetic ski with a strong character demands a real physical presence. If you engage right off the bat in a carved turn without being fully committed, the Wave 74 tends to carry the skier into longer arcs than expected while accelerating hard. To take control and successfully vary turn radii, the instructions are clear: you must imperatively load the forebody and drive forward through the tongues of your boots. If you get lazy on the heels, the stiff tail immediately becomes dominant and can trigger unwanted oversteer. It is therefore a ski that must be piloted centered or well forward to unlock its full potential.
Once properly locked onto its edge, it proves to be exceptional: edge grip is razor-sharp, heavy edge angles can be achieved, and the energy out of turn exits provides a lovely rebound. The tip chatters slightly on hardpack—a characteristic acoustic signature of certain Kästle constructions—but this behavior in no way compromises overall edge hold. In a straight line, the ski remains perfectly stable provided it is kept under pressure from the front.
The Kästle Wave 74 also offers great versatility in skidded or drifted-carved turns, proving to be very enjoyable, lively,and equipped with excellent base glide.
