After exercise, a protein bar or drink can be a practical solution for restoring protein balance. If you just went for a run around the block you would do without it. This applies to intense or long-term exercise to encourage tissue reconstruction. Special care is generally taken with managing glycogen stocks, but a little less for protein intake. Some athletes tempted by vegan diets are particularly exposed if they do not eat wisely.
We were therefore able to test several bars from the Myprotein range. The focus is on the 6 Layer Bar designed to eat after exercising, during the metabolic window, which is approximately 30 minutes after stopping your exercise.
The 70g bar is easy to open and the edible part is easily removed. It has an interesting texture, a mix between crunchy and soft layers. It has a caramel taste first followed by something like milk chocolate. The taste is not too pronounced or too sweet (at the start). It is nice to eat, it is almost like a classic chocolate bar. The 6 Layer Bar is nevertheless big, we never managed to eat a whole one after our trail running excursions. Its soft consistency means it absorbs shocks in your bag and doesn’t disintegrate once it has been removed from your bag.
The protein intake is more than 30g, this is a more or less an accepted threshold for this type of supplement. When you study the bar’s composition more closely, you discover a long list that do not always sound like they are natural products. We would have liked a more organic approach. This product also contains palm oil.
This bar’s very practical format and its fast supply of protein could be a good solution to autonomous races like the Marathon des Sables. For other activities, a nutritionist pointed out to us that a slice of ham or vegetable protein provide the same result, yet it is probably less easy to slip into a sports bag …
