The Abus Airbreaker helmet is particularly suitable for hot or very hot excursions. Its ventilation is phenomenal: there are air channels everywhere. So sweat dripping in front of your eyes is greatly reduced. What joy over passes at the height of summer!
The other big bonus is how light it is. We weighed it at 200g. So you don’t even feel it when you’re riding and over long distances.
It should be noted that the Abus Airbreaker helmet is an In-Mold construction and we don’t benefit from Mips technology, which adds weight (but which theoretically improves safety in the event of an impact). The question is: when in doubt, isn’t it better to have a few more grams in weight and be better protected? The question is open, that’s your choice.
Meticulously built, the Abus Airbreaker offers efficient aerodynamics. We didn’t notice any whistling or wind-resistance. It is obviously difficult to accurately measure the effectiveness.
The downside of lots of ventilation is the possibility, more than ever, that an insect enters the helmet. Curiously, a honeycomb grid is situated on the top of the helmet, supposedly to improve ventilation. We would have liked to have seen this grid at the front of the helmet to stop wasps, bees, etc. from entering.
The Abus Airbreaker is designed in collaboration with the Movistar racers, and adopts a fluid design. The clamping system is at the rear. The wheel is not a Boa system, but it does its job. Be careful not to over tighten the helmet, there’s not much foam padding and it’s very thin. And since there is no Mips and therefore no middle layer, the skull is quickly in contact with the structure, especially on either side of the top of the head.
The straps are comfortable, flexible and well-positioned. The chinstrap adjustment could be more practical to handle: the binding size and pressure needed to open it. The operation is even more problematic with gloves on. But, that said, you wouldn’t normally wear this helmet in cold weather.
Your sunglasses can be attached by slotting the arms into to the helmet by the temples above the forehead. This is one of the few helmets tested where sunglasses hold this way. Wide-screen style sunglasses fit easily under the helmet. Adjusting the height of the helmet’s headband is done in the blink of an eye, thanks to a simple and practical notch system.
The Abus Airbreaker helmet’s main quality is its amazing ventilation, ideal in the height of summer. Lightweight, well-finished, it doesn’t have the Mips technology and nevertheless is susceptible to insects getting in.
