We really enjoyed this pair of Altra FWD Via, which takes a step away from the brand’s traditional DNA centered around zero drop.
That said, it still retains the signature Altra wide toe box — roomy and extremely comfortable.
With the FWD Via, Altra continues the diversification it began with models like the FWD Experience. Notable features include the tall (almost oversized) midsole and, most significantly, a 4mm drop, which is a small revolution for the brand. For runners who don’t regularly or consistently opt for zero drop shoes, the Altra FWD Via is a very compelling option.
Beyond the low drop, the FWD Via offers a very stable midsole and clear, grounded foot placement. There’s no wobble, no mushy transitions — just clean contact and control. In contrast to many current road shoes with ultra-soft, bouncy foam that compromises stability, this Altra lets you focus on your stride mechanics and fine-tune your gait.
Despite the thick sole and brand claims, cushioning is fairly minimal, and that’s not a bad thing. We actually liked the ride feel of the FWD Via: it encourages precision, yet offers just enough forgiveness. It feels best suited to shorter runs and focused training sessions. The forward rocker is present, but much more subtle than what you’ll find in many competitors’ shoes.
Lacing isn’t particularly precise, and the flat laces benefit from a double knot to stay secure. However, the heel pull tab makes putting them on much easier. The mesh is sturdy, and the build quality is in line with today’s standards — no visible seams.
Outsole grip is good overall, though slightly lacking under the midfoot.
A new road shoe from Altra with a 4mm drop.
Precise and direct in feel, it’s a great tool for refining your stride.
