In the Arc’Teryx range of ski jackets, the Arc’Teryx Procline is an exceptional product. It’s a protective jacket that has been pushed to breathability. Because even if it is water repellent, it isn’t waterproof because the zips aren’t. Tested in the rain, wet snow (even if not designed for this), the water got in through the pockets.
No, this Arc’Teryx Procline jacket is made for going uphill, situations where your body heats up fast like ski touring. It was deliberately aimed at great breathability. The Gore-Tex Infinium membrane does the job pretty well provided you think intelligently with consistent underlayers (technical T-shirt, mid-layer that evacuate moisture to the upper layers, etc.) and the huge, zipped vents under the arms. It is really comfortable to wear when going uphill, in strong winds, and during exertion because its stretchy fabric has “four-dimensional extensibility”. The feeling is also amazing, you don’t really feel like you’re wearing a shell. The Arc’Teryx Procline isn’t like a second skin but it comes close.
It’s just as useful in the descent thanks to a very well-designed cut, a pocket for a possible ski pass, and a snow skirt.
Our main criticism is its weight, which we hoped would be lower: 720 grams listed on our scales, in size M. Even if it isn’t the same program, the Helly Hansen Odin Infinity Insulated Jkt that even has insulation is listed at 735 grams. So, the Arc’Teryx Procline’s grams can make a difference when hiking, when you’re looking for lightweight.
We liked the easy-sliding zips, the many large pockets in which you can slip your skins or goggles. Optimal neck protection, with the Arc’Teryx trademark of bringing the top of the collar back inside the jacket (top of the central zip). It works well but sometimes is a little too present. Other brands do the opposite, they “spill” the top of the collar outwards.
The hood works perfectly even when wearing a helmet: you have full head rotation without restrictions, especially turning left and right.
The same goes for the shaped cuffs with Velcro fastening of indisputable quality: both very stylish and efficient.
Last remark, to us the Arc’Teryx Procline seemed to smell quite quickly, this would have to be checked over the long term. It is officially kitted with the Recco system, the reflector is placed at the base of the hood, at the back of the neck.
The Arc’Teryx Procline is a very breathable jacket designed for physical efforts. It is very effective in dry weather. Water-repellent, it can’t deal with heavy rain. It is very comfortable because it’s so flexible, very well-designed, and is manufactured with great care in keeping with the usual Arc’Teryx standards.
