The Asics Gel-Nimbus is designed for long distances on the road. This is a shoe that we had great pleasure running with because it corresponds to our practice and our expectations. We hesitated to reward it with a FIRST Award, but in the end the verdict came down to a few details.
First of all, it is a very comfortable shoe that gives you the confidence that it won’t cause overheating and pressure points. Foam padding is abundant at the heel and around the ankle, which, moreover, limits the dissipation of sweat. The forefoot volume is for classic foot shape, it is to both precise and comfortable.
The laces are effective and stay in place (no need for a double knot) and is precise right down to the forefoot. It takes a bit of time to set up its initial setting, but then it is quick to put the shoes on. The oval laces have the right diameter for easy handling with cold fingers. Be careful not to over-tighten at the top of these Asics, even if the tongue is thick, you can get a pressure spot.
Beyond its great overall comfort, the main feature is the cushioning. No doubt, Asics masters this kind of filtration. On the Asics Gel-Nimbus 22, we enjoy cushioning which seemed a lot to us when we started running. But it’s a very well-balanced cushioning because the hard point comes quite quickly and the rebound is effective: you don’t sink into the ground; you don’t need to force the spring (the 10mm drop also helps). The sole has that energy that we love, that little peps that differentiates an inert shoe from a product that makes you want to really run. Obviously, the Asics Gel-Nimbus helps you push your limits and go the miles.
This is especially true when fatigue sets in and foot strike becomes more erratic. You can make mistakes without consequences, the shoe deals with them without slapping the ground.
Cushioning is also present at the forefoot, obviously a little less than the heel. One of the points raised that kept the Asics Gel-Nimbus 22 from clinching the award, (it was close), was the slight heel roll. We were able to test some road shoes that proved a little more laterally stable. When you accumulate the miles, you do get used to it, but the phenomenon is there.
The stride is fluid, the front stability is very present, and the downforce is very good for a long run.
You quickly forget you’re wearing these shoes and they even take care of you in difficult times (cushioning quality and recovery).
The other note concerns its weight: 313g in size 42.5. The Asics focuses on comfort and durability (it wears out very little, that’s a big plus when you buy it) but some models are lighter.
If you aren’t looking for an absolute win, this Asics Gel-Nimbus 22 is a safe bet because it is very suitable for long distances on the road. Comfortable, durable, it offers excellent cushioning coupled with spring.
