The Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD 130 are extremely light freerando boots and are without doubt one of the best ones around with their stiffness/weight ratio.
They are very snug fitting, and slightly smaller than standard, half a size smaller.
They are tough to get on because of the contrast between the shell’s stiffness and the soft liner. The tongue also gets trapped in the shell’s envelope, and if you don’t open up the shell wide enough your foot doesn’t slide in easily despite the two straps front and back to help you.
The Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD 130 are competing with the Nordica, Fischer Ranger Free 120 and the Rossignol Alltrack Pro 130. Compared to the Rossignol, they are a lot less comfortable but more reactive, lighter and more precise. They have a 98mm last.
These Atomic have Alpine characteristics in their lateral pressure transfers and “touring” with their specific buckles. Atomic designers have dug deep to make a lightweight and tough product.
The notch system buckles enable you to adjust them in stages. The hooks can stay in position, open in the uphill. Two small clips on the notch bar enable the hooks to stay in place.
One of these Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD 130 interesting points is the very easy handling of the walk/ski mode when you are wearing gloves. There is a little cord with a plastic end on each boot that are very practical, simple, tough and efficient.
The other major good point is their ability to pilot with precise pressure. The 130 flex is very noticeable. When you use a lot of pressure the shell doesn’t deform much.
We were a bit disappointed by the liner that wasn’t very warm, and also wasn’t very comfortable.
They are comfortable in walking mode, and pleasant to use. The Grip Walk sole makes you lean forward slightly when you walk with a kind of rocker effect. Even when the hooks and the strap are closed there is still a comfortable range for walking (which isn’t the case with the Rossignol Alltrack Pro 130).
In walk mode you benefit from good ankle flexion for those steep slopes, whilst having nice lightweight boots. These are really 100% efficient, and you could easily take a size bigger.
Light and very precise with a 130 flex, these Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD allow you to attack steep slopes downhill, but also in the uphill.
