The Atomic Maverick 105 CTi test didn’t start off well… but then, things took a turn for the better. Fortunately, the testers didn’t get stuck on its design—or rather, the lack of it. What a disappointment… We’ve seen much better and certainly more appealing designs.
That said, the ski’s surprising features started to shine through, especially its original, bevelled, almost rectangular tip, which matches the same treatment on the tail. The tail is not overly raised, a positive point for easy storage on lift racks.
In terms of skiability, Atomic has really nailed it, managing to create a clever blend of a wide ski (we tested the Maverick 105 CTi in 185 cm, with a 134.5mm tip width), long, and super effective on hard snow, all while maintaining impressive stability. Despite its width underfoot, the leverage feels minimal on hard surfaces. The rockers and flex are especially well thought out on this ski. So, it’s not a ski that traps your feet, which is quite surprising for a ski of this size. Even on very hard patches, it’s a ski that can be quickly and almost effortlessly put into a skid. It doesn’t grab at the front or rear. The active edge on hard snow is somewhat limited, but it works well. This truly expands its range of use. The best part? It can even perform well on piste, although that’s not its primary focus.
Off-piste, the Atomic Maverick 105 CTi is a fantastic ski, extremely easy to initiate turns. The highly effective tip helps to glide over bumps and difficult snow conditions. It launches the ski into the turn and assists throughout. The tip does make some noise and moves around a lot on hard snow. However, this doesn’t really affect its performance because the rest of the ski is flawless. It’s a shame the edge doesn’t fully wrap around the tip, as it would offer better protection.
The Atomic Maverick 105 CTi is not heavy underfoot.
Its accessibility and ease of use are its key strengths. Despite its slightly aggressive appearance, it’s a surprisingly docile ski. You can really push your speed on it, so “performance” is definitely a fitting term for this ski.
The cherry on top is that the Atomic Maverick 105 CTi performs very well in carved turns. The edge is easy to find, and it flows on long turns, allowing you to relax and enjoy. Very pleasant. It’s no problem to lengthen the turn radius, but to shorten it, you need to get forward. At that point, the effect feels a bit less solid and less responsive.
You’ll have a blast on the piste with this ski, which is forgiving: if someone cuts you off, you can quickly recover and put the Atomic Maverick 105 CTi sideways, which is very reassuring—even on hard snow. It’s not a dominant ski, although it’s nicely energized. On rougher terrain with hard snow, it can send some feedback to the feet. In powder, you can open up the turn, pick up speed, but you can also weave through trees on tight turns, in a more upright stance.
A very good all-mountain ski that excels off-piste and even performs well on-piste despite its width. Accessible, high-performing. A true all-mountain ski. The design, though, needs a rethink, as it doesn’t reflect the ski’s true qualities.
