Black Diamond opted to integrate the (removable) battery directly into the optical unit.
As a result, the Distance LT headlamp is more compact, with no cables or connectors running from the back of the head like with rear-battery models. However, it does concentrate quite a bit of weight on the forehead—specifically, 110 grams. This means the strap must be tightened well, and over long distances, comfort takes a noticeable hit compared to models with the battery positioned at the back.
In terms of lighting performance, the 1000-lumen maximum output provides excellent visibility for nighttime movement.
The beam is well-defined, and battery life aligns with the manufacturer’s claims:
High mode: 4.25 hours
Medium mode: 14 hours
Low mode: 120 hours
The optical unit is tiltable, allowing for precise beam adjustment.
The Black Diamond Distance LT meets the IP67 standard, meaning it is dustproof and waterproof for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter.
We strongly recommend that users download the user manual from the Black Diamond website, as the lamp offers a wide range of lighting modes that aren’t particularly intuitive to access at first.
The headlamp comes with a small USB-C cable. Charging is quick. A small fabric pouch is included for storing the headlamp and its cable.
The battery is interchangeable, which could be very useful during a race aid station for a quick swap. In practice, however, the operation is rather fiddly—especially if you don’t have another light source to help.
You need to detach the optical block, remove the two ends of the strap, and carefully transfer them to the new battery. Care must be taken not to bend the two small plastic pins. Then, you have to reattach the optical unit to the new battery using a (also fragile) axis, slide everything into place, engage two clips, and finally lock it with a small lever. It’s far too complicated, delicate, and time-consuming.
This headlamp has undeniable strengths in terms of lighting power, but users should definitely become familiar with its operation before heading out on any serious outdoor adventure.
