This is exactly the kind of product we appreciate because it is not limited to a single use. The Brooks Ghost Trail clearly embraces versatility. Its connection to the road-focused Brooks Ghost is obvious, with the main differences being an outsole offering better traction, added lugs, and enhanced upper protection. It is a shoe designed for all-terrain running, urban parks, groomed trails, and, more broadly, trail running in its widest definition. It is also an ideal gateway shoe for road runners looking to explore off-road routes. In many ways, it is an everyday running shoe that other brands might have positioned within the growing “gravel running” category.
To fully represent Brooks’ trail running philosophy, the brand’s other flagship model remains the legendary Cascadia 19.
Returning to the Brooks Ghost Trail, the shoe features an 8 mm drop and weighed a lightweight 295 grams on our scale in size 42.5. Once running, the familiar qualities of the road-going Brooks Ghost immediately return. The forefoot transition is smooth, quick, and fluid. The 8 mm drop is clearly noticeable. We also observed a certain degree of lateral torsional flexibility, something heavier runners should consider carefully before purchasing. For most runners, however, the midsole foam performs very well, delivering effective energy return whether landing on the heel or midfoot. Forefoot strikers also benefit from good impact absorption, making it possible to run long distances without excessive fatigue.
The heel is particularly well secured and remains firmly locked inside the Brooks Ghost Trail. The large rear pull loop makes putting the shoe on easy and convenient. The flat laces provide a powerful and secure fit. The only area for improvement concerns the tongue, which could offer slightly more cushioning; for optimal comfort, avoid overtightening the laces.
The Brooks Ghost Trail has a relatively slim profile, which contributes to its precise foot placement. On trails, it delivers a highly versatile ride, combining the speed and responsiveness of a road-running shoe with a moderate level of cushioning. The result is a shoe that feels both lightweight and lively. Grip is sufficient for non-technical terrain and what could be described as fast-rolling trails. Naturally, when conditions become very wet, muddy, or rocky, the limitations of the Brooks Ghost Trail become apparent. Foot protection, the rock guard, and overall traction remain relatively modest compared to more specialized trail-running models.
A genuinely versatile shoe inspired by road running, featuring an adapted outsole designed for non-technical trails. An excellent option for runners discovering trail running, as well as hybrid athletes who regularly transition between roads, dirt paths, parks, and light off-road terrain.
