The Camelback Shasta 30 L backpak contains a water bladder. The 3-liter volume enables you to do long summer-day outs.
In addition to the fact that this pack allows you to benefit from all the Camelbak hydration expertise, it has some specific features. The first is its rigid back, so you can carry heavy loads (not sure it’s really necessary just for a day trip?) as it distributes weight really well (does the shoulder-strap thickness match the weight of the loads?). You don’t feel rigid objects (stove for example) with the well-protected back. The two semi-rigid “studs” on either side of the lower back and generally in the lower back area are very noticeable and can be annoying depending on where the pack sits: you really have to carefully adjust the height. You have limited forward flexion with the waist belt buckled. The good thing: the back of the Camelbak Shasta 30 L is well ventilated. The double (!) waist belt provides very powerful support without being uncomfortable. The straps slide well.
The big bonus with the Camelbak Shasta 30 L is its water bladder. No complaints here: simple, practical, and efficient. First, it’s super easy to fill: a very wide opening, you just have to turn the big wheel to access it. The small plastic arm, which is used to fix the water bladder vertically in the pack you use to hold the pack when filling the bladder. Waterproof, solid, and easy to clean. The pipette with the very wide tip is easy to access, and it also has a stopcock.
There are the usual storage spaces but also a rain cover in the event of a storm.
There’s just the weight to consider, 1550 g. Even if the bladder is included in this weight, the Camelbak could easily be a bit ligther.
This Camelbak Shasta 30 L backpack is kitted with the very performant water bladder from the same brand and has a very rigid ventilated back. It can carry heavy loads. You gain in efficiency what you lose in comfort. A pack for day hikes or lightweight bivouacing.
