Columbia Konos Speed Trail ATR

We were close to awarding a “First Test” distinction to this superb Columbia Konos Speed Trail ATR, with its fresh, eye-catching design. It’s a shame that a few details ultimately brought down the overall score.

Let’s start with what truly impressed us. This Columbia Konos Speed Trail ATR is an extremely lightweight shoe that virtually disappears on the run. On smooth, non-technical trails, it allows you to pick up speed and accelerate easily. It’s a real pleasure to run in. Cushioning is present in the heel and under the metatarsals, but it’s well balanced and doesn’t compromise ground feel. The shoe delivers excellent energy return thanks to its foam. Lateral stability remains solid, and the forward roll is smooth and efficient. The drop height is not specified.

The outsole grip is designed for relatively dry terrain and not overly technical trails. It also sheds mud effectively.

The tongue features well-placed padding just below the lacing eyelets, providing optimal protection. Another positive point: it is securely attached on one side while remaining free on the other, making the shoe easier to slip on. Unfortunately, it’s a bit stiff at the top and can be felt when flexing the foot. Perhaps it will soften over time with use.

The ankle collar could fit closer to the foot to better prevent debris from entering. Arc’teryx faced a similar issue on some of its trail running models, where this area wasn’t tight enough either.

The mesh upper performs well, as does the rock guard. Be sure to double-knot the thin, flat laces.

The Columbia Konos Speed Trail ATR runs large. Heel hold could also be slightly more secure.

Build quality is solid, with no visible glue marks and minimal stitching. We especially like the small claw-like details on the heel—a nice stylistic touch.

Overall, this is a reactive, very lightweight, and highly enjoyable shoe for fast, flowing terrain. A few refinements would make it a truly outstanding product.
