When developing their products Compressport cleverly explores lightness that is clearly focused on performance. So now we notice that their catalogue has more and more jackets (Hurricane Waterproof 25/75 jacket), T-shirts and gloves (Hurricane Waterproof 10/10 Mittens) that are competing to be lighter and lighter.
Compressport Hurricane Waterproof 10/10 give protective pants an overhaul. This is one of the few models that weighs less than the belt that can be used with it! On the scales: in size M it weighs 98g! And that’s not all, the fabric makes it really compactable. Once rolled up or folded, it doesn’t take up any space.
Described like this, the Compressport Hurricane Waterproof 10/10 seems to be the ideal product for any trail runner (and other outdoor sports). Other criteria are essential: waterproofness, strength and breathability.
We were able to test them for many weeks on various terrain. Like the ultra-light Compressport jackets, these pants (as well as the mittens) will never leave your bag. Why would you hesitate when they are as light as this!
Its rather ample cut means you have plenty of leg room for moving easily and the Compressport Hurricane Waterproof 10/10 can also be worn over other textile layers. If the look isn’t that flattering, their performance is second to none: they are comfortable, practical and the fabric does not make any noise when running. Comfortable because the fabric is (very) stretchy and not unpleasant against the skin.
The ankle zips are very handy, you don’t have to take off your shoes to put the pants on. There’s no surplus material at the base of the legs that flaps around in the wind or gets caught on anything when running.
The limit that we see to these pants is in their durability. Be careful not to sit anywhere: the seat area is exposed to wear and tear. Similarly, avoid prickly bushes and other thorny undergrowth. You can’t have everything: lightness and toughness.
The belt is bizarre. No point in having pants that weigh less than 100g and add a belt that weighs the same. The Compressport Hurricane Waterproof 10/10 is worn without a belt (if it is on the hips) or you have to find an ultra-light one.
Last but not least, how does the Compressport Hurricane Waterproof 10/10 behave in extreme conditions? As soon as the temperature drops or the wind rises, the Hurricane immediately keeps you warm. When the air becomes wet; ditto, protection is performance. When it starts to rain, even if the pants have 10,000 Schmerbers and waterproof seams, the waterproof limit is reached if the extreme conditions last too long. For these pants, as for any other ultra-light models, don’t expect miracles: after a while you don’t know if you’re wet due to the weather or to your own sweat. In any case, it protects you against cold, wind and limits the onslaught of moisture.
In terms of breathability, it’s always difficult to have a definite or at least objective opinion: it depends on the conditions and who is wearing the garment. But for once our opinions concerning the fabric aren’t negative, the Compressport Hurricane Waterproof 10/10 seem pleasantly breathable. Of course, they have certain limits (clothing layers management, effort in relation to the weather …). While with some pants, you quickly feel the perspiration captured in the fabric, with the Compressport Hurricane Waterproof 10/10, this threshold seems longer. Don’t expect miracles either, but let’s say that the Hurricane have a lesser “oven” effect than some models. Compressport has included a ventilation system at the crotch: openwork fabric!
The Compressport designers haven’t forgotten to incorporate small reflective tape for safety. Their quality manufacture is obvious along with waterproof seams and zips that slide correctly.
The Compressport Hurricane Waterproof 10/10 pants are ultra-light weight and provide effective protection against wind and wet. They lose points in very heavy rain but they do provide some breathability. However be careful of their intrinsic fragility if they catch on anything sharp.
