Just when you thought that the compression sleeve material couldn’t get any better, it can! The R2 Oxygen has pushed the boundaries further…
First and foremost, the weight: 11g. We received size 4 (the largest size available), which weighed 15g. If we compare with the R2V2 from the same brand, tested by our team it was 19g (https://www.test4outside.com/en/produit/compressport-r2v2/ ). Even if we are astonished by the featherweight of the R2 Oxygen it is its comfort that we really noticed.
The material is incredibly soft, thanks to precision mapping, in other words the weave according to the individual compression zones and comfort zones, you forget you are wearing them. They mold to the form of your legs and respect the legs’ movements. You literally wonder if you are wearing compression sleeves!
The top of the R2 Oxygen have been researched in detail because the flexibility and softness of the stretch are excellent. The R2V2 were already pretty good here, but these R2 Oxygen are streets ahead.
Breathability is important, these are not designed for insulation, the R2 Oxygen are designed so that your calves will always be feeling fresh in the heat. They are designed for intense and long outings: trail running, marathons, triathlons.
In use they were easy to slide on. The little tongue at the top of the sleeves are very practical. NB: the R2 Oxygen are stretchy, not like the R2V2, so when you slide them onto your legs don’t pull too hard, slide them on gently being careful to position them correctly.
Whilst running you really don’t even notice they are there. The calf muscles are held without being too compressed to move. They stay put, even if sometimes we wondered if they had slipped off as they were so comfortable! It is there super ventilation that provides this sensation.
It is always difficult to judge the net performance of the efficiency of this type of product concerning the venous return and recovery. Compressport have improved their figures even more on the gains of the R2 Oxygen certifying: +17% muscle oxygenation, +10 to +15% venous return improvement, up to 30% vibration reduction and 29% reduced risk of injury. Each person has to decide for themselves. We used them for weeks and weeks for sport and for recovery.
Compressport also certify that the R2 Oxygen are UV protective and also have a water-repellent fiber for triathlon – would you put them on under your wetsuit for the swim before cycling?).
It would be necessary to validate the durability of the fiber in trail running and especially in rough terrain areas with undergrowth. The R2 Oxygen seem more fragile than the R2V2, to fraying and ripping.
The R2 Oxygen conquered without doubt our testers… Most notably the undeniable comfort, flexibility and softness to the touch, which are the strong points. The compression is of course present, but you actually forget all about this function whilst wearing them. An excellent product that wins our FIRST Award.
