Salomon Stance Pro 86

With its colorful, upbeat graphics, the Salomon Stance Pro 86 breaks away from the somewhat austere look of earlier Stance models. We appreciated this ski right away because, unlike some of its predecessors—which felt heavy and lifeless—the Stance Pro 86 is a bit more enjoyable to drive. That said, it still doesn’t deliver a ton of rebound or raw excitement.

What it does offer is solidity underfoot. This ski holds strong at high speeds and supports committed edge pressure without washing out. While the tip does chatter noticeably, the Stance Pro 86 stays planted through big arcs and responds well to carved turns, letting you ski with confidence.

Its main drawback comes on very hardpack: grip isn’t particularly aggressive, so you’ll find yourself limiting edge angles and pressure variations. At its natural 17 m radius (or slightly more), the ski feels rock-solid and composed, but trying to shorten the arc exposes its limits—it no longer delivers the same crisp edge hold. You end up backing off, recalibrating, and skiing more cautiously.

At more moderate speeds, however, the Stance Pro 86 is very pleasant. It pivots easily, flattens smoothly, and transitions back to the edge without fuss. In these situations, it feels relatively accessible and forgiving. The “Pro” label might surprise some, since in terms of pure performance we’ve skied more reactive, incisive, attack-oriented skis in this category. The Stance Pro 86 follows the skier—it doesn’t lead—but it’s steady, dependable, and remarkably composed. A quiet performer in every sense.

Over the course of a full ski day, its versatility is what shines through. It handles cut-up snow well thanks to a generous tip rise, pivots easily in tight spots, and makes controlled short turns in skidded or drifted style.

We did note glide performance to be somewhat lacking, especially in wet snow. On the plus side, the topsheet is durable and the ski fits easily into lift racks.

All in all, the Salomon Stance Pro 86 is a capable, well-rounded ski—not flashy, but reliable. A good choice for strong skiers who want to enjoy many facets of the mountain without being pushed too hard.
