Dynastar M-Free 99

The most striking element about this Dynastar M-Free 99, like the whole M-Free range, is the ski’s feather lightness. You just don’t feel it underfoot, or when you carry it on your shoulder. You get the impression that there’s not much substance, but you’ll see below how effective it is.

This Dynastar M-Free 99 offers an immediate and ultra-easy pivot, its nice rockers facilitate the manoeuvre (this isn’t the case with the M-Pro 85). On the Dynastar M-Free 99 the efficient sidecut is very short underfoot. It makes it so pleasant to ski on the edges of the piste, in the forest, and in moguls: it pivots effortlessly. An excellent ski for teaching skiing. It can also be used to ski fakie (backwards), not too complicated.

You immediately notice the tip chatter, they are constantly moving, vibrating. We wondered what would happen when we picked up some speed? And there you have it, as soon as the speed increases, you need to really pay attention to the skis, that said – also it depends how you ride them… If your weight is central and you go for the edge, you reap the rewards of power and grip, which is surprising because it doesn’t look that mechanised, but there’s nevertheless power underfoot.

To summarize, this Dynastar M-Free 99 grips well in angulations, you can swing your feet far out, get up on the edge and it stays rock solid. But it requires a fine balance. However, if you try using the tail, leaning into it you will get turn segments, it slips and loses its fluidity. We prefer to ski with the weight in the centre of the boot or even a little bit forward towards the tip, this allows you to reposition the front and find some active sidecut. In any case, the turn initiation is done on the front and therefore the full movement. Pressure on the tail works well in powder or chop, but not on hard snow.

On compact snow, you need the right position for the skis to behave correctly. On very hard snow on steep slopes, you see its limits, this Dynastar M-Free 99 does sections of the turn, it grips then slips making it difficult. In this ski’s defence the front edge was very well sharpened.

We did really like this Dynastar M-Free 99 for the programme it’s designed for: off-piste, chop, and small moguls. It has great damping. It absorbs, filters and is a very easy ski that skiers new to freeriding can use easily. We do have doubts as to the result for very powerful skiers… A hefty skier will make the skis suffer at the front. Its performance ease ratio makes it a very good ski.

It’s a pretty ski, but the knocks from edges quickly mark the top sheet. Small detail: the ski’s surface is extremely smooth, so when you carry these skis your gloves slip.
