We were very curious about testing this Elan Voyager Amphibio Technology. The ski industry has thousands of crazy patents: inflatable skis, with nozzles, etc… Has Elan managed to develop an acceptable ski that works well on snow that makes you forget that it is foldable? Our great interest in this product is of course its practicality: it is a solution for all city dwellers who have storage space problems, for families who go skiing by car who can directly store their equipment in the boot without encroaching on the back seats (the unmentionable boot hatch for the skis…).
The Elan Voyager is a folding ski with a rather ingenious system: the platform of the bindings is mounted on a pivot, which allows the ski to be folded in half and slipped into a bag designed for this purpose. The whole thing is 93 centimetres long folded.
It is 10% heavier than the other skis. You can feel it when you carry them on your shoulder, but underfoot you don’t feel the extra weight too much because the masses are well distributed.
Once you’ve got over the surprise factor, you discover a ski that actually behaves rather well. It’s not a great ski in terms of skiability but it’s not very far from the classic Amphibio.
The pack includes a carrying bag, ski poles, snow brush, and drying cloth. In all straight lines you can see the lack of glide. You can feel the metal axel parts underfoot foot cause friction.
The flex doesn’t allow for a very fluid, constant ride. Skidding turns are done without any problem. Carving, the ski rides in segmented turns. You must be careful on very hard snow because the grip is reduced. The Voyager holds its own in high-speed straight-lining. The tail never blocks.
However, we are still quite surprised by this Elan Voyager because for the vast majority of skiers, if they aren’t told it’s a folding ski, they wouldn’t even notice. A good skier who feels the ski, likes to maintain the turn and relaunch, won’t be fooled. It’s a good option for people who don’t want to struggle with long skis. It’s pretty well-designed.
