The Elan Wingman 86 Ti are asymmetric skis, in other words there is a left and right ski, with a difference in their rigidity depending on the sides. Do not ski them the wrong way around, they don’t work – we tried!
These skis are very reactive, they initiate the turn very quickly. These are unusual skis, they feel kinda soft, gentle that unnerves expert skiers. Which is surprising because they are up and over 700 euros in price and aimed at experienced skiers who know how to balance and carve. You can ski them in a more classic stance, upright, when skidding turns. The tail and tips don’t trap you, they’re great – fun skis.
Once on the edges the carving is fab on soft snow. On compact snow they are adequate so long as you use the tail. You can vary the radius a little, and they glide well.
But, as soon as the slope, pressure, or speed increase the Elan Wingman 86 Ti bend a lot and you lose the bite. On icy areas you quickly find their limits and your confidence gets a splicing. They are lightweight underfoot despite their “solid” construction. Well-designed, well-finished and with a certain perceived quality with their integrated metal tips.
Off-piste the Elan Wingman 86 Ti don’t change, they remain cool skis, pleasant so long as the slope doesn’t get too steep or the terrain doesn’t deteriorate too much.
The Elan Wingman 86 Ti are easy skis designed for experienced skiers who are looking for easy carving. These aren’t extreme carving skis, they aren’t ultra-performant skis either. Heavy skiers will distort them easily if treated badly: their grip rapidly deteriorates. So choose the length of ski well and the skier’s weight before heading out with them. They are pleasant skis for chilled out skiers.
