Atomic Maverick 96 CTi

FIRST

An excellent ski, highly versatile despite its width underfoot. It remains very maneuverable, with surprisingly little leverage when setting the edge. On hard snow, there’s minimal chatter, making it a very pleasant ride—you can do just about anything with it, especially skiing fast.

On edge, it feels reassuring: powerful, grippy, and very stable in big-radius turns. The shovel does flutter a little (less than the old Mavericks), but overall you feel confident. You know the tip will handle chop, wet snow, or small bumps with ease. The ski never throws any surprises at you.

A very interesting ski to ride, delivering plenty of fun across the full spectrum of all-mountain skiing. It’s excellent on groomers, but just as comfortable off-piste. It can also turn short and flat, with pivots that come easily—an absolute treat in the trees. In moguls, it absorbs well, yet it can also blast long, straight lines at high speed. It feels light underfoot but is perfectly engineered, with a high level of performance. Atomic wisely kept the tail profile low, making it easy to fit into lift racks.

The glide is excellent. In carved short turns, though, you reach its limits—it requires more effort. There’s a threshold to its docility: push too far, and the tail can let go a bit. It’s definitely more suited to lengthening the turn, especially around its 18-meter sidecut radius.

In carved turns, you really need to drive the shovel. Stiff boots are essential to get the most out of it. Transitions from flat to edge are smooth and instinctive, despite the 96-millimeter waist. It reacts instantly. An excellent ski for teaching, since it truly does everything. And it can go fast—whether on piste or off. Not too heavy either, so it’s an interesting option for a freerando setup.

The graphics are a bit more exciting than the old Mavericks, though still nothing to rave about. The tip is rectangular and distinctive—you either love it or not. In any case, the prow-like shape helps you ride up and over snow and get out of tricky situations. Its slim build also makes pivoting in soft snow much easier.

No edge reinforcement on the tip—too bad. Likely a weight-saving choice, but it clearly hurts durability.

The tail is non-dominant, almost invisible underfoot. Overall, a well-designed ski with perfect flex. Ultra-versatile and high-performing both on piste and off. Bravo, Atomic. Award First.
