The Fischer Ranger 99 TI is new in the Freeride range. They are nevertheless in the same vein as the previous Rangers but with a few modifications.
The skis we tested were not brilliantly sharpened at the front and even along their entire edges. This doesn’t help pivoting and the tips catch at the front on hard snow.
They are relatively powerful skis in relation to the fairly narrow tail and tips, you could expect them to bend a lot in these areas, but they don’t. But the tail is much easier to handle than the previous generation Rangers, especially if you find yourself off-balance at the rear. You can hang on and the skis don’t career off straight.
The Fischer Ranger 99 TI are generally skis where you search fluidity. The flexibility difference between the front and rear in comparison with the mechanized waist is probably a part of this feeling. When you want to push them and reduce the turn radius the maneuver becomes complex. They are mono-radius, these Fischer require placement, with finesse from the rider and skill to change the turn.
When the Fischer Ranger 99 TI ride their 17-meter radius they ski beautifully and carve at high-speed. They grip, are stable, don not chatter. The tips absorb and give a great feeling of serenity so you can go really fast.
On compact snow if you give them angle you can go far, they don’t lose grip. But on artificial snow as soon as you want to change the radius a bit and if you are slightly off-balance on the rear, the stiff waist is present and the Fischer Ranger 99 TI lose their fluidity.
We did really love the ride, they glide well and are much better than other Fischer skis in the range, they have an absolutely excellent base.
Thanks to the clever weight distribution you don’t feel the Fischer Ranger 99 TI underfoot, they are very light up front.
The skis have a beautiful rounded shape, and the top sheet has fine ridges so you can grip them when carrying them on your shoulder with gloves on and they don’t slip.
The fibers show through giving a stunning appearance at the ski tips; which aren’t protected, so time will tell how they hold out.
There is the magnificent metal insert at the waist, which is on several of their skis in the range.
What’s astonishing is the fine structure of the tail. This aesthetic shape gives a fluid appearance to the skis. Thanks to this finesse they are very performant in powder, they pivot easily and pleasantly, even despite the size 181cm that we tested, we could’ve even used longer skis.
There’s good stiff torsion, you can go into super-steep and icy areas, they hold. The tips work well in mounds of snow, the only downside is that you can’t go super fast.
Overall the Fischer Ranger 99 TI are mono-radius skis, performant, pleasant off-piste and wide turns. Although for all types of short turns, fast turns, they are less fluid.
