Helly Hansen Alpha 3.0 jkt

What we noticed immediately was how comfortable this Helly Hansen Alpha 3 is. You really have the impression of being wrapped in cotton wool, it’s so soft and cozy. The stretchy fabric moves with your anatomy in motion, the Primaloft Black® 80g insulation in the sleeves and hood, along with the Primaloft Gold® on the rest of the body keep you toasty warm. Two layered construction with the Helly Tech® membrane. The jacket is beautifully cut, quite snug fitting with a stylish silhouette, but ample enough to be able to wear a polar type fleece underneath.

That said, as the Helly Hansen Alpha 3 is so well insulated you don’t necessarily need extra thermal protection. Unlike most jackets of this type you could quite easily wear it with just a thick base layer underneath.

We loved the fact the jacket doesn’t make any rustling noise.

Well-designed, well-made, the Helly Hansen Alpha 3 has a multitude of pockets that we won’t bore you with the details, just one in particular that, thanks to its insulation, is designed to prevent your phone battery from going flat too quickly when it’s really cold. It is very efficient, we tested it with an iPhone and it lost its charge much slower. But, we would’ve preferred this insulated pocket on the right side away from the heart.

The Helly Hansen Alpha 3.0 jacket is kitted out with the Recco ® detection system. Remember it’s a passive system and in case you are buried in the snow – but the resort needs to be equipped with a detector, and a helicopter can land or ski patrollers can be onsite fast (more than 10 minutes under the snow chances a-of survival are rapidly reduced). So having a Recco® jacket is a good idea but wearing an AS, having a shovel and probe, and airbag system are indispensable.

It’s difficult to judge the breathability of this jacket because it depends on each individual and the different under garments. If you manage the base layer and mid-layer correctly the jacket doesn’t get too hot and importantly the Primaloft® doesn’t hold humidity and dries very quickly. There is also a ventilation system in the back called H²Flow™. Its performance is reduced of you are carrying a backpack.

The membrane resists well against the snow and rain. If we dare, we can compare it to the breathable and waterproof material Dermizax®. The softness of the pair is comparable. Although what we don’t understand is putting non-waterproof zips on the ventilation openings. When the entire jacket is waterproofed, one area lets water in – under the arms. We bet that the next Helly Hansen Alpha 3.0 version will have this rectified.

The fixed snow skirt does up easily. Helly Hansen hasn’t forgotten the press studs when you want to forget about it when you need it.

We liked the collar’s volume and covering, which is just at the right height and soft. The zip cursor is easy to use with gloves on.

The removeable hood adjusts at one point behind the head. If we need to point anything out when we pull on the elastic the edges of the hood have a tendency to go backwards limiting the surface of its lateral protection.

The Helly Hansen Alpha 3.0 already has a very effective insulation layer: the Primaloft®. As well as its warmth, its main assets are its softness and remarkable overall comfort. The waterproofness under theh arms and hood adjustment could be improved. This is a stunning product, weel-cut and very pleasant indeed to wear.
